Indian Money : Mahatma Gandhi’s Photo will Not be Printed on Currency Notes, RBI Clarifies.

Will the picture of the Father of the Nation be removed from the notes?

India had its own currency in which Mahatma Gandhi’s image is printed on all Rs. 5, Rs. 10, Rs. 20, Rs. 50, Rs. 100, Rs. 200, and Rs. 500 notes. Recently, a rumor circulated on social media that Gandhiji’s image had been removed from the notes by the RBI. The Reserve Bank of India has clearly stated that this information is totally false.

The official statement from the RBI

The reserve bank has clarified that it has not received such a proposal from the government for the removal of Gandhiji’s image.

Some posts also stated that rabindranath tagore or dr apj abdul kalam would be printed on new notes. This also turned out as entirely false and misleading.

Right now, it is not at all a discussion of removing Gandhiji’s image.

How did this false information operate?

Some sample designs were sent to iit delhi prof dilip saha and his team on 14th august. These samples have images of gandhiji, rabindranath tagore, and dr kalam as watermarks. This is just for research and is not the final selection meant for notes.

The roping holds that the design as well as the analysis of the technology and security features of the notes remains evaluated at periods, not that the image of gandhiji is to be removed.

Can the digital currency (e-Rs) have an image as well?

No.

E-Rupee, a digital currency that has been issued by the reserve bank of India, is an electronic currency and not paper currency and hence, cannot have any type of image or design inscribed on it.

The digital currency is entirely built on code and digital value.

History: When did Gandhiji’s image get into notes?

Early independence notes featured ashoka pillar symbols or anything else. A note featuring Mahatma Gandhi’s face was first issued in 1969. In 1987, Gandhi’s image was incorporated into the RS 500 note.

Thereafter, different notes did bring about different design features, but the image of Mahatma Gandhi did remain unchanged on the Mahatma Gandhi series and these new Mahatma Gandhi (MGN) series.

Conclusion

There is a lot of misinformation being spread on social media, but the RBI has clearly proclaimed: There is no proposal on the table of removing the image of Mahatma Gandhi from the notes. The issuance of entirely new notes bearing the images of other eminent personalities is completely fictitious.

So, there is no need to go into panic. Until there is an official announcement made by the government or the RBI, Gandhiji’s image will continue to decorate Indian currency and be a part of our historical heritage.
