The scheme to provide free sewing machines for women, was sponsored by the Central Government under the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana for women’s economic empowerment. Under the scheme, sewing machines are provided free of charge to economically backward women, or a cash assistance of up to ₹15,000 is provided to purchase a sewing machine. The applications were commenced, with thousands of women already under its fold. The scheme aims at empowering women by providing work opportunities at home.
Skills Lack Resources
Many women have good sewing and embroidery skills, but they do not own a sewing machine due to their financial condition. This scheme will open new avenues for such families. With the availability of the sewing machine, women can take up small home-based businesses like sewing garments, embroidery, children`s wear, blouses, or even some designing, and thus earn some livelihood.
Objectives of the Scheme and Benefits
This scheme is specially directed toward such women who, because of household work (child care, elderly care, or social constraints), cannot step out to work. The financial assistance directly enters the bank account of the beneficiaries by the government, eliminating middlemen from the entire scheme and thus ensuring transparency. Therefore, the assistance will allow women to start their task right away.
Skill Training and Daily Expense
Free skill training is also offered under the scheme in case it is to be warranted. For women not acquainted with sewing or those wishing to upskill, sewing training is offered. The daily training allowance of ₹500 is granted to cover basic needs, so that trainees are further motivated without worrying about making ends meet. In addition to this, a completion certificate is awarded by the government to help trainees land more job opportunities.
Men Can Apply
Men can apply, but women are given priority in the selection process. Widows, disabled, and extremely economically distressed women are given special priority.
Eligibility and Application
Key Eligibility: Applicants must be women, permanent citizens of India; age approximately 20–40 years; monthly family income less than ₹12,000 is preferred. Applications can be made online on the official website of the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana. Documents such as Aadhaar, proof of residence, proof of income, ration card, bank details, and passport-size photographs need to be uploaded. Successful submission results in a registration number.
Online Status Check
Once they receive the registration number, these women can check their application status online at any time. Such practice promotes transparency and limits their need to make numerous visits to the offices.
Step Forward Towards Self-Reliance
Not only is this scheme financial assistance but further aims to give women respect, self-esteem, and a much bigger say in the family. These women with the sewing machines shall stand up on their own, becoming contributors to the family income.
